Word, the popular five-letter word guessing game is now everywhere. The overnight success has apparently taken over social media and family group chats where people share their findings. Despite its popularity, there’s one thing you might not know: it has a hard mode that you can toggle on and off. So yes, technically there are two ways to play. Word.
When you play the game for the first time, hard mode is disabled in the game’s default settings. Hard mode doesn’t change the types of words you see, but it does change the letters you can use to guess. when you play Word, type any five letter word and the game will give you clues based on the word you guessed. A green letter means it is the correct letter in the correct place in the Word of the Day. A yellow letter means that the letter appears in the last word but is in the wrong place. Polygon has published a guide to the words our own staff start with.
According to the normal rules of Word, You can guess any word at any time. In hard mode, you can use any word to start, but then you’re limited to guessing later through the clues. For example, if my first guess was “PLAY” and I drew yellow tiles for the letters G, A, and S, then I need to include those letters in my next guess. I couldn’t guess “VIDEO” but I was able to guess “SAGGY” because the word saggy contains the letters G, A, and S.
Depending on how you play Word, you may have played it by the Hardmode rules, of course. It may seem that you are more likely to guess the last word when you consider all previous guesses. However, if you already have three clues, playing this way means you’ll only get feedback on two letters at a time, making things tricky.
How to enable Wordle hard mode
To enable hard mode, click the settings icon (it looks like a gear) in the top-right corner. A game settings screen will appear. The first entry is “Hard Mode”. Click on the button to the left of it to toggle the mode on and off. If it’s green, it’s on. If you want to play with him, don’t worry; You can turn it on or off at any time, even in the middle of a guessing game.
