Have you ever tried a sloe gin fizz? It’s refreshing and balances deliciously sweet with tart. It starts with sloe gin, then we add fresh lemon, some sugar and sparkling mineral water. Happy and simple.

What is sloe gin?

Sloe Gin hails from across the pond in England and is all about ‘sloe berries’. These are small wild berries found throughout England. However, you would not pluck them from the bush. Apparently they taste awful.

With all their wisdom, humans have found a way to turn these little berries into something delicious. As? By soaking them in alcohol, of course. The berries are dipped in gin with a touch of sugar. And so Sloe Gin was born.

Today, you’ll most likely find two varieties of sloe gin in the United States. They are easy to tell apart because one is expensive and has a high alcohol content and the other is cheap and has an alcohol content close to 30 proof.

Let’s start with the most expensive variety. Two common sloe gins are Plymouth and Bitter Truth. Both are made in the style mentioned above: macerating sloes in highly concentrated gin. Depending on where you live, these can be difficult to find. (This is for us unless we buy online).

Cheaper sloe gins have a lower alcohol content and cost a lot less ($10 to $15). In fact, you might even find that the gin has never been used and is instead a neutral grain alcohol. Because they contain a lot less alcohol, you should also add regular gin to your cocktail when using them. Helps with taste. (Cheaper sloe gins can be a little sweeter.) If you’re using the more expensive variety, there’s no need to add additional gin. We’ve provided instructions for both options below in the recipe.

One last thing, you can make your own sloe gin at home. If you fancy checking out this homemade sloe recipe.

Advice from Adam and Joanne

  • Note on sloe gin: Since there are two varieties of sloe gin in the United States, the recipe will vary depending on which one you have at home. The recipe above assumes you’re using the cheaper 30 Proof Sloe variety of gin. If you’re using the more expensive and stronger option, don’t add extra gin and instead increase the amount of sloe from 1 ounce to 2 ounces.
  • Plain Syrup Note: We know we ask that you only use 1 teaspoon of plain syrup, and if you’re only making a drink or two, you may not want to make plain syrup yourself. You can buy it or replace it with regular sugar. If you use sugar, be sure to stir or shake the gin, lemon juice, and sugar well to help the sugar grains dissolve. If you are planning to make your own simple syrup, it is very easy to do and you can follow our instructions by referring to our article on how to make simple syrup.
