Typically, a Pokémon game’s difficulty changes depending on which starter you choose. Since you don’t have a wide range of Pokemon to choose from early in the game, the first big fights can be difficult, and this one is no exception Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Instead of gym entertainers, you will be confronted noble Pokemon – big frantic bosses. The first, Kleavor, is a bug and rock type. The second, Lilligant, is a grass and fighting type, and the third, Hisuian Arcanine, is a fire and rock type.

However, Water-type Ottawott is strong against two of these three bosses, Fire-type Cyndaquil is strong against one of them, and Grass-type Rowlet is strong against…none of them. If you’re looking for a smooth start, Oshawott is a good choice. If you are looking for a challenge, go for Rowlet.

In the end, all you have to do is decide which Pokémon you like. You can find counters for Noble Pokemon and beat them without fighting, so choose the starter your heart desires.
