Make a cosmopolitan cocktail
While there are many variations, ours comes from what we (and most of our friends) have on hand in our pantry. Good vodka, triple sec (we like to use Cointreau) and fresh lime. A zest of aromatic orange peel and you’re done.
If you go for vodka, go for something medium to high level. We usually carry Stolichnaya or “Stoli”, but use what you like. The other thing to remember here is to use fresh lemon juice, not the bottled stuff. You realize it’s a little more work, but the taste is so much better.

Finally, we like to add a little orange zest. Sure, it might seem like an unnecessary accompaniment, but if you get it right it adds a little sweetness and when you sip the cosmopolitan cocktail you get orange essence that hides the vodka’s strength and smell.
If you add the orange zest, peel it over the drink. That way, any oils that flow out of the orange will fall into the drink. Rubbing the edges of the glass doesn’t hurt either.
It’s such a fresh, bright and happy drink. you don’t think so

Perfect cosmopolitan cocktail
Not too sweet and not too tart, this cosmopolitan cocktail recipe is perfect alone or with others. We like to use plain vodka or citrus flavored vodka. If you can, choose a mid-range or even high-end vodka, as there is a lot of vodka in the recipe. We like to use Stolichnaya. We like to add a little orange zest to this. Sure, it might seem like an unnecessary accompaniment, but if you get it right it adds a little sweetness and when you sip the cosmopolitan cocktail you get orange essence that hides the vodka’s strength and smell. Makes 1 drink
Watch us at the recipe
2 ounces (1/4 cup) vodka
1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, or Cointreau
3/4 ounce (1 tablespoon + 1 1/2 teaspoons) cranberry juice cocktail, see notes
1/4 to 1/2 ounce (1 1/2 teaspoons to 3 teaspoons) fresh lime juice
2 inch orange peel
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and lime juice. (We love the added bite of extra lime juice, which is why we use 1/2 ounce in our cosmopolitan cocktails. Use what works best for your taste, though.) Shake the shaker until very cold, about 30 seconds. Then strain into a martini glass.
Garnish with orange peel/twine. For an extra taste kick, peel the orange zest over the filled cocktail glass. This is how the orange oils are sprayed into the jar.
Advice from Adam and Joanne
- Cranberry Juice: You can use sweetened cranberry juice (often referred to as “cranberry juice cocktail”) or unsweetened cranberry juice. If you’re using sugar-free, you’ll probably find that you need to add some plain syrup or agave as it can be quite acidic.
- To make 4 drinks at once, add 1 cup vodka, 1/4 cup triple sec, 1/3 cup cranberry juice, and 2-4 tablespoons fresh lime juice to a pitcher. Stir and adjust to taste. Refrigerate. To serve, pour into four martini glasses and garnish with orange zest.
