Lexus Has Developed 800 Volt Architecture For EVs

Toyota’s luxury car brand, Lexus, has developed a new 800-volt electric architecture that outlines its ambitions for electric vehicles. Lexus chief engineer Takashi Watanabe admitted that the high-voltage architecture was complete. He also said that this would not mean that this technology will be used in all Lexus and Toyota vehicles. The Lexus RZ 450e from 2023 already runs on 400 volts.

The main reason for this discrepancy is the relationship between battery capacity and load. Bigger batteries can handle faster charging architecture, and that’s something Lexus IS considers on a case-by-case basis.

Watanabe also said the breaking point will be around 100kWh as EVs with batteries of 100kWh or more will have the new 800-volt architecture. It’s not much different than what Tesla claims. He claimed that Cybertruck and Tesla Semi Trucks are candidates for the 800-volt architecture, while smaller cars like the Model 3 and Model Y would also be 400-volt for economic reasons.

Watanabe revealed that anything over 150kW at Lexus is expensive, both for the vehicles and for the manufacturers and the charging infrastructure. Lexus will focus on the specific needs of each region.

In the United States, 150kW charging stations are widespread, but 350kW fast charging stations are gradually appearing. In India we see more charging stations with 50 kW.

“CCS is the global standard, it’s something practical, and 150 (kW) CCS seems to be the majority for the foreseeable future,” he added.
