Jaguar I-Pace review

Perception
What is?
The boldest of Jaguar’s bold moves: an all-electric SUV, the first credible rival to Tesla’s premium electric vehicle dominance, a car that beat German rivals to market, and a radical design piece. The I-Pace ushered in something big when it launched in 2018: Major manufacturers, not just Silicon Valley startups and BMW, were ready to properly invest in building new electric cars from scratch. you may want to own and could afford it.
How far will it go in a tank of electrons?
After incremental updates over the years, the current highlights are: The I-Pace uses two concentric electric motors, one on each axle for permanent all-wheel drive, producing 395 hp and 513 lb-ft of torque, delivered by single speed gearbox. The lithium-ion battery, placed under the floor, de rigueur these days, is sized at 90 kWh (of which 85 kWh is usable), enough for a claimed range of 292 miles on the WLTP cycle. Give him the berries and 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 124mph is fast by any measure.
Bitch. What about the load?
The I-Pace will charge at around 22 miles per hour from a 7kW home wall box. But that doesn’t particularly matter: you’ll just plug it in overnight and leave it alone. It’s charging speeds away from home that matter, and the I-Pace is starting to lag behind. It can be charged to a maximum of 100 kW with a DC charger, which means a charge from 5 to 80% takes about 45 minutes. The Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S and others can charge in less than half that time.
No more time for gas station coffee, then. Joy. And look at the range. As with any other car, the WLTP range is only applied in perfect condition. Drive any electric car in sub-zero winter conditions and you’re unlikely to do better than two-thirds of the claim. So expect 200 miles in the winter, maybe 230-240 in the summer.
He’s definitely a bystander…
Sounds good, doesn’t it? Those 20-inch wheels (standard on SE and HSE models and often blacked out to blend in with the rubber) are probably the ride quality/Instagram sweet spot… 19-inch wheels are also available if you want to look silly , or 22 if duty. But it’s the proportions that steal the show: the stubby nose that brings the front wheels forward and the tall, boxy rear end define the outline, while the rear spoiler, vented hood and flush door handles provide the detail. Her beauty doesn’t hit you like a botoxed Alpha, it’s a slower burn than that, but in the end her bravery hooks you.
And the styling and branding help convince you it’s worth it when other similarly sized cars (the Mustang Mach-e and Kia EV6 come to mind) cost around £20,000 less. The I-Pace starts at £65,565, positioning it alongside the Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC.
How is it mounted?
That’s the key to the I-Pace’s appeal. All electric cars tend to be smooth and quiet, but few are truly engaging and rewarding to drive. Is. He drives precisely, he drives beautifully, he’s fast in the field and makes light work of anything he gets his hands on. It makes traveling enjoyable when electric cars can often feel heavy and dull with twist steering and a disconnected chassis.

What’s the verdict?
Let’s start with the warnings, okay. The I-Pace isn’t cheap, it’s not an EV for the masses. It is still a top-of-the-range vehicle whose price is accordingly. We also can’t deny that there are still issues surrounding the car’s range, even though the true 200-mile capability will comfortably cover the needs of the vast majority of buyers. And as it’s been on sale for four years, it’s a shame Jaguar hasn’t yet expanded the car’s model range, perhaps with a single base engine or a performance version.
It’s also comfortable, quiet, spacious, well-built… all the things that, if we’re honest, matter on a day-to-day basis. The I-Pace won’t be for everyone, but kudos to Jaguar for creating a car that boldly steps into the unknown and still shows those pesky Germans the way.
