How to make our favorite toddy
We make them often, especially in the colder months. The variations are endless so use this as a guide. When it comes to the best shot for toddyWe opted for a dark rum or a bourbon. Brandy or whiskey go well together, but our favorite is a dark rum or bourbon hot punch.
You can also deviate from honey and lemon. Orange, grapefruit or Meyer lemon would be nice. We love the floral sweetness of honey, but brown sugar, agave syrup, or other sweeteners can also be used..
Tea is a good change., in addition. We have already tried chamomile, ginger and even black tea. They were all good but the black tea really stood out as a favorite, especially with the dark rum.
A dash of apple cider vinegar is very nice. Adam got the idea after ordering a hot punch around town: They mixed up a bush, which is basically a fruit and vinegar syrup that’s added to cocktails and sodas. The acidity in the vinegar brings out all the flavors of the punch without making it taste too sweet.
Since we don’t make our own bushes at home (yet), we thought adding some apple cider vinegar might work well. That did. So good we think you should try it for yourself.
Prepare two toddies, one with vinegar and one without. So taste the difference. I bet you’ll prefer the pickled one.
Another thing to consider is to buy a bush and add that – we really like Pok Pok bushes. Others recommend Inna Shrub and The Hudson Standard Shrub, all of which are highly rated.
There are probably local producers too – ask a bartender what they have behind the bar. My final suggestion for playing with your own toddy is to ask for a spice or two. Think cinnamon, cloves or allspice.

Easy honey lemon tody
Try dark rum or bourbon for this. Brandy or your favorite whiskey will work, but dark rum and bourbon are our favorites. Hot punches are best piping hot, you should consider heating your mug just before preparing the drink. Simply fill your mug with hot water and then empty it.
Makes 1 drink

1 ounce dark rum or bourbon
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon of pure honey
1/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, optional
1/4 cup hot water or brewed tea
slice of lemon
Pour the honey, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar into a hot mug. Add hot water or hot tea and stir until honey dissolves. Add rum or bourbon, stir and finish with a lemon wedge.
